A History
Speaking of Birth is an oral
history of personal experiences of childbirth told by first-time
mothers in Brighton and Hove.
Realised as a one-hour radio
programme, first broadcast on Resonance
104.4fm and also produced as a 60-minute audio CD, Speaking of Birth
documents the mothers' stories and provides a vivid snapshot of the
realities of childbirth today. It is relevant to any person whose life
has been - or is about to be - touched by birth, and presents a moving
and candid overview of the defining event in anyone's life.
Five hundred copies of the CD were
given away free in Sussex - through
playgroups, clinics, Surestart children's centres, antenatal groups,
libraries and by midwives, doulas and though the NHS Health Promotion
department in September and October 2006. The programme also had
international appeal and was distributed and heard in Austria, Portugal
and USA.
Speaking of Birth was produced by
Daniela Gargiulo for Audio Craft. The
project was supported by Awards for All, a UK lottery grants scheme for
local community projects.
